An ambitious young director Victoria (Jessica Stevenson), takes a production of Sweeney Todd, a musical about brutalisation and murder into a maximum security prison using lifers as the chorus.

It's an ambitious project, but as the show begins to come together, the men discover not only hidden musical talent but a common humanity denied them by the brutal nature of prison life. The supporting cast is impressive, including Shaun Dingwall (Crime and Punishment) as a prison officer and Samantha Spiro (Cor Blimey!), Kulvinder Ghir (Goodness Gracious Me) and David Oyelowo (Spooks) as actors, with leading British opera singers, Steven Page and Richard Van Allan playing Sweeney Todd and the Judge respectively.

The actors improvised dialogue through three weeks of workshops prior to the start of filming and the film was partly shot at Haverigg Prison in Cumbria where some prisoners were used as extras in the film. Many of the cast spent time visiting prisons and speaking to the inmates and guards in the run-up to filming. The film-makers have obviously drawn on these experiences to make the drama as realistic as possible, and the drama proves to be gritty, sad, humorous and inspirational without veering into cheesy platitudes about the redemptive powers of art.

The setting of a maximum security prison was a far cry from Jessica Stevenson's usual haunts on the Royle Family's couch as Cheryl and in the Spaced flat as Daisy. "To be honest, when I was there I didnt really give it much thought" she said. "I was just there and we were working with prisoners who were getting involved, being very co-operative and enthusiastic at our being there" she says. "It makes you realise that the mark of a civilised nation is a civilised prison, and I was struck by how civilised the prison I visited was, and impressed by that. I hadnt been to a prison before."

The improvisation process was new to Stevenson "Ive never worked like this before, and its brilliantly freeing. Its like your main focus is being in character and youve got complete freedom with the dialogue. Its very challenging, and it can be very hard, when the intention of a scene isnt totally clear confusion can arise. Theres a constant need for qualification and discussion".

Kulvinder Ghir, best known for his performances in sketch show Goodness Gracious Me, developed and played the part of prisoner Rajiv. "I didnt want Rajiv to be a mass murderer or serial killer. I visited prisons and most of the murders committed were where a man had been pushed into a corner and then went beserk - had stepped over the line". Rajiv emerged as a tailor who murdered the brother-in-law who was mistreating his sister. Hes a survivor who has found a way to get by with the other inmates by doing them favours, using his wheeler dealer instincts.
